How to write your software engineer resume

  1. Lead with your stack and your level

    Your title line and summary should name the kind of engineer you are (backend, frontend, mobile, data) and the languages and platforms you use most. Recruiters and ATS filters search for them.

  2. Write every bullet as impact

    Use action, tool and result: “Rewrote the pricing service in Go with a Redis cache, cutting p95 latency by 45%.” Latency, cost, uptime, users, deploy frequency and incidents are all measurable.

  3. Pick three numbers you can explain

    Each number on your resume is an interview question. Choose the three achievements you can walk through in detail, and put them first.

  4. Add a projects block when it helps

    Open-source work, a side project with users or a hackathon win shows how you build when nobody assigns the task. One or two projects with the technologies are enough.

  5. Keep the skills list honest and short

    Eight to twelve technologies you have used in production beat a wall of logos. Group them if you have many, and drop anything you would not want to be tested on.

One page for up to about seven years of experience. Senior and staff engineers can use two pages, but the first page should still carry your stack, your current role and your strongest results.

Should a software engineer resume include projects?

Yes for students, juniors and career changers, and for anyone with open-source or side projects that use the stack the job asks for. List the project, your role, the technologies and one result.

Should I add a GitHub link?

Add it if the profile shows code you are proud of, with readable READMEs. An empty or private-only profile adds nothing; leave it off and describe your work in the bullets instead.
