How to write your nurse resume

  1. Put your license where it is seen

Add RN after your name and list the license state and certifications such as BLS, ACLS or PALS in their own section. Recruiters check these first.

  2. Name your unit and patient load

Med-surg, ICU, emergency and pediatrics are different jobs. State the unit, the number of beds and your usual patient ratio so the reader can picture your shift.

  3. Show results beyond tasks

Every nurse gives medications. Bullets about precepting, charge duties, quality projects or patient satisfaction show what you add on top.

  4. List the systems you chart in

Mention Epic, Oracle Health (Cerner) or the record system you use. A hospital on the same system can see you will need less training.

  5. Keep each bullet short

One line per bullet, starting with a verb such as Assessed, Coordinated or Taught. A nurse manager reading between shifts will skim.

Questions

Should a nurse resume be one or two pages?

One page is usual for nurses with up to about five years of experience. Two pages are fine for experienced nurses with charge, leadership or specialty roles to describe.

What is the difference between a nurse CV and a nurse resume?

In the United States a resume is a short summary of your experience and a CV is a longer academic record. Outside the US, “CV” usually means the same thing as a resume.

Where do certifications go on a nursing resume?

Give licenses and certifications their own section near the top or right after the summary, with the issuing state and expiry dates where relevant.
