How to write your data analyst resume

  1. Name your tools in the first lines

    SQL, Python or R, Excel and a BI tool such as Tableau or Power BI. Put them in the summary and the skills list; most analyst postings are screened for them.

  2. Write results, not tasks

    “Built a dashboard” is a task. “Built the dashboard 40 managers use, replacing six manual reports” is a result. Add who used your work and what changed.

  3. Show the scale of the data

    Rows, tables, sources or the number of studies you worked on tell a hiring manager what you are used to.

  4. Link to a portfolio

    A Tableau Public profile or a GitHub repository with one clean analysis helps, especially for junior roles. Remove anything confidential.

  5. Explain the business question

    Each bullet should make sense to a manager who does not code: what question you answered, and for whom.

Yes, if you are new to the field or changing careers. One or two projects with a real dataset, a clear question and a published result can stand in for work experience.
