Student resume example

Most students write their first resume with only part-time jobs, class projects and volunteering to show. That is enough. Below is a complete example for a university student applying for a summer internship, followed by tips on what to put first when your experience is short.

How to write your student resume

  1. Put education near the top

While you are still studying, your degree is your main qualification. List the school, the degree, your expected graduation date and, if it is 3.0 or higher, your GPA. Move education below experience once you have a full-time job behind you.

  2. Count part-time and campus jobs

Front-desk shifts, retail and tutoring all show reliability, communication and time management. Describe what you did and how much of it, such as how many customers or questions a day, instead of only listing duties.

  3. Add relevant courses and projects

Name two or three courses that match the job, or a group project with a clear result. For a marketing internship, a class campaign you planned is stronger evidence than a long list of subjects.

  4. Keep it to one page

Recruiters expect a student resume to fit on a single page. Drop high school details once you are at university, unless they are awards that still matter.

  5. Write a short, specific summary

Two or three sentences are enough: your year and field of study, what you are good at, and the kind of role you want. Change the last sentence for each application.

Questions

What should a student put on a resume with no experience?

Lead with education, then add part-time jobs, volunteering, class projects, clubs and skills. Any role where you were trusted with customers, money, schedules or other people is worth listing, with a line on what you achieved.

Should a student resume include a GPA?

Include it if it is 3.0 or higher, or if the employer asks for it. Leave it out once you have a few years of full-time work experience.

How long should a student resume be?

One page. Use a clean layout with clear section headings so the reader can find your education and experience in a few seconds.
