First job resume example

Your first resume does not need a job history. It needs to show an employer that you are reliable, available and easy to train. Here is a complete example for a high school senior applying for part-time retail and food service jobs, built from volunteering, a school store and babysitting.

How to write your first job resume

  1. Say what job you want and when you can work

Managers hiring for part-time shifts care about availability first. Put the kind of job and your hours in the summary.

  2. Count the work you have done without pay

Volunteering, babysitting, mowing lawns, pet sitting and helping at a school store are real experience. List them like jobs, with an honest label such as Volunteer or Self-employed.

  3. Add a number wherever you can

“About 300 boxes a shift” or “50 students at lunch” shows the pace you can handle better than “hard-working”.

  4. Use school to show you are reliable

A GPA of 3.0 or higher, honor roll, sports and clubs show that you turn up and follow through. Put them in your education section.

  5. Get the certificates employers ask for

A food handler card, CPR or a lifeguard certificate can be done in a weekend and makes you ready to start. Some states also require a work permit for workers under 16 or 18.

Questions

How do I write a resume for my first job?

Start with a short summary that names the job you want and your availability. Then list volunteering, school jobs and informal work as experience, followed by your education, skills and any certificates. One page is plenty.

What do I put under experience if I have never had a job?

Anything where someone relied on you: volunteering, babysitting, helping in a family business, school clubs or team captaincy. Use the real title and add one or two bullets about what you did.

Do I need references on my first resume?

You do not need to list them on the page. Have two people ready, such as a teacher, coach or volunteer supervisor, and give their details when an employer asks.
