How to write your restaurant server resume

  1. Describe your section and volume

Number of tables, guests per night and the type of restaurant tell a manager what you can handle. “Six-table section, 80 guests” says more than “served customers”.

  2. Show that you sell

Restaurants care about check averages. Mention upselling, specials you pushed or sales rankings if you have them.

  3. List food safety and alcohol certificates

Food handler and alcohol service certificates are often required. Put them under education or on a separate line so they are easy to spot.

  4. Name the POS systems

Toast, Square, Aloha or another system: knowing it already means less training on your first day.

  5. Keep it to one page

A server resume should be short and easy to scan. Leave out jobs from more than ten years ago unless they were in hospitality.

Questions

What should I put on a server resume with no experience?

Any customer-facing work counts: retail, cashier work or volunteering at events. Add a food handler certificate if you can get one, and stress speed, friendliness and teamwork.

Should I include tips or sales numbers?

Leave out tip income, but sales results such as a high check average or being a top seller are worth a bullet.

Is a server resume different from a bartender resume?

The skills overlap, but a server resume focuses on section size, guest service and upselling, while a bartender resume focuses on drink knowledge, speed at the bar and cash handling.
