Resume example with no work experience

Having no formal work experience does not mean having nothing to show. Volunteering, caring for family, training and the tools you use every day are evidence an employer can use. Here is a complete example for an adult applying for an entry-level front desk or office role, with every line true.

How to write a resume with no experience

  1. Aim the summary at one kind of job

Name the role you want, such as front desk or office support, and the two or three skills it needs that you can prove. A clear target makes a short resume look focused instead of thin.

  2. List unpaid work as experience, with an honest label

Volunteering, caregiving and running things for a club or family business are experience. Use the real title, such as Volunteer or Family Caregiver, and describe what you did.

  3. Prove transferable skills with numbers

“Kept records for 210 households” or “replied to every message within a day” turns soft skills into evidence an office manager recognizes.

  4. Move training and certificates up

A short course, certificate or typing speed shows you are ready to start. When you have little work history, put education right after the summary.

  5. Explain a gap in one line

If you stayed home to care for someone, say so in the experience section. A plain, short explanation is better than a blank year the reader has to guess about.

Questions

How do I write a resume with no work experience?

Write a summary aimed at one kind of job, then list volunteering, caregiving, school or personal projects as experience, followed by education, certificates and skills. Every bullet should describe something you really did, with a number where possible.

Which resume format is best with no experience?

A combination format: a skills-focused summary on top, then experience in reverse date order, including unpaid roles. Purely functional resumes that hide dates can make recruiters suspicious. See resume formats compared.

Should I explain an employment gap on my resume?

Briefly, yes, if the gap had a reason you can name: caregiving, study, health or relocation. One line is enough; you can add detail in an interview if asked.
