Resume for freshers: a simple format and a full example

A fresher resume has one job: show a recruiter in under a minute that you have the basics for the role. You do not need work experience for that: your degree, best projects, any internship and the right skills are enough. Below are what recruiters in India look for, a full example, a simple format to copy and the mistakes to avoid.

What recruiters in India expect from a fresher

  1. One page

At a campus drive or on Naukri, a recruiter skims hundreds of resumes for one role. One focused page gets read.

  2. Education first

With no full-time job yet, your degree is your main qualification. Put it near the top with your college, year and CGPA or percentage, then class XII and X with board and score. Many companies filter on these scores.

  3. Projects with results

Your final-year project and one or two mini projects are your work experience. For each, write what you built, the tools and a number: users, accuracy or a prize.

  4. Internships, even short ones

A two-month internship counts. Name the company, dates and two or three things you did.

  5. Certifications that match the job

NPTEL, Coursera or vendor certificates help when they match the role; ten unrelated badges do not.

  6. A declaration, only if asked

“I hereby declare that the above information is true,” with place and date, is still common in India. Add it for government jobs or when asked.

Simple resume format for freshers

Copy this order. It works for engineering, commerce, science and arts graduates alike.

1. Header

Full name, phone, a professional email, city, and LinkedIn or GitHub if it is up to date.

2. Career objective

Two lines: your degree and year, the role you want and your two strongest skills.

3. Education

Degree, college, years and CGPA or percentage; then class XII and X with board, year and score.

4. Projects

Two or three, each with your role, the tools and one result with a number.

5. Internships and training

Company, dates and two or three bullets that start with a verb.

6. Skills

Technical skills that match the job description first, then two or three soft skills you can back up.

7. Certifications and achievements

Relevant courses, hackathons, NSS or NCC, sports or student body roles.

8. Languages and declaration

Languages with your level. A one-line declaration with place and date only if the employer expects it.

For experienced candidates and the difference between a resume, a CV and a biodata, read the resume format guide.

8 mistakes that get fresher resumes rejected

  1. An objective that says nothing

“Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation” fits every fresher in India. Name the role and your real strengths instead.

  2. Two or three pages

School competitions and a long hobbies list push your projects off the first page. Cut them.

  3. Projects without your part in them

“Developed an e-commerce website” does not say what you did. Name your part, the tools and the result.

  4. Skills you cannot defend in an interview

Every skill you list is a possible interview question. Remove anything you only saw in a tutorial.

  5. Personal details nobody asked for

Father’s name, religion, marital status and a full home address belong in a biodata, not in a resume for a private company.

  6. An unprofessional email address

Use a simple firstname.lastname address for applications.

  7. The same resume for every job

Match your objective and skills order to each job description. It helps with ATS filters.

  8. A photo, scan or Word file that breaks

Send a text-based PDF named with your name, such as Sneha-Patil-Resume.pdf, unless the portal asks for a Word file.

Questions

What should a fresher write in a resume?

Your contact details, a two-line career objective, education with scores, two or three projects, any internship, technical skills, certifications and languages. Each project or internship should say what you built, the tools you used and one result with a number.

How long should a fresher resume be?

One page. Recruiters at campus drives and on job portals read hundreds of fresher resumes, and one page with your best projects is stronger than two pages of filler.

Should a fresher resume have a declaration?

It is optional. Many Indian employers and government forms still expect a one-line declaration with place and date at the end. Private companies rarely need it, so add it only if the employer asks or you have space left on the page.

Should I mention my class X and XII marks?

Yes, as a fresher in India. Many companies use class X and XII percentages as an eligibility cut-off for campus and off-campus drives. Write the board, year and percentage on one line each, below your degree. Drop them after a few years of work.

What is a simple resume format for freshers?

Header, career objective, education, projects, internships, skills, certifications and achievements, languages, and an optional declaration. Use one column or a narrow sidebar, one font, clear section titles and no tables or graphics that hide text.
